Model Railroad Scales

There are several different model railroad scales, each with its own characteristics and benefits. Here's an overview of the most common model railroad scales:

  1. Z scale: This is the smallest scale, with a ratio of 1:220. Z scale trains are about half the size of N scale trains, and they're often used for small layouts or for displaying trains in smaller spaces.
  2. N scale: With a ratio of 1:160, N scale trains are a popular choice for hobbyists who want to create a larger layout without taking up too much space. N scale trains are about half the size of HO scale trains.
  3. HO scale: This is the most popular model railroad scale, with a ratio of 1:87. HO scale trains are small enough to fit in most homes but large enough to have plenty of detail and operate realistically.
  4. S scale: This scale has a ratio of 1:64, making it about halfway between HO scale and O scale. S scale trains are popular with modelers who want to build a layout with larger trains and more detail than HO scale allows.
  5. O scale: This scale has a ratio of 1:48, making O scale trains larger and more detailed than HO scale trains. O scale layouts often have more realistic scenery and buildings, but they also take up more space.
  6. G scale: This is the largest scale, with a ratio of 1:22.5. G scale trains are often used for outdoor layouts and garden railways, and they're popular with modelers who want to create a more immersive experience.

There are others but these are the most common.

Each model railroad scale has its own benefits and drawbacks, and the choice of scale often depends on the size of the available space, the level of detail desired, and personal preference.
